Plumeria “Madam Poni”
Plumeria ‘Madame Poni’ flowers exhibit a striking tri-color “rainbow” pattern. Each bloom is star-shaped, measuring about 3–3.5 inches in diameter. The petals are long, narrow, and distinctly twisted along their length, giving a unique corkscrew effect.
Coloration is creamy white with vivid yellow (often greenish-yellow) radiating from the center and a bold red band running down one side of each petal. The backside of the petals also shows strong red coloration. As the flower ages, it may open with more yellow that fades to white, but the red stripe stays prominent throughout.
The fragrance of ‘Madame Poni’ is sweet and pleasant, but generally mild in intensity. The keeping quality of ‘Madame Poni’ flowers after picking is excellent, one of its standout features. The blooms hold up 2–3 times longer than most plumeria varieties once picked, remaining fresh and colorful instead of wilting rapidly.
In other words, unlike many plumerias whose flowers might limp after a day, ‘Madame Poni’ blossoms retain their form and fragrance for an extended time when used in leis or arrangements. This superior shelf-life has earned the cultivar a reputation as one of the best lei flowers among plumeria enthusiasts.
Madame Poni’ grows as a medium-sized plumeria tree with an upright, moderately spreading form. Its growth habit is medium in vigor – neither compact nor wildly lanky. The branching is somewhat open and upright, which gives the tree a pleasing shape that is suitable for landscapes and large containers alike.
